What does EarDub do?

EarDub is a Chrome extension for watching foreign-language YouTube videos by ear instead of reading subtitles the whole time.

It works from the captions a video already has, including auto-generated ones. YouTube splits auto-captions into short fragments, so EarDub first joins them back into complete sentences and translates each sentence with its surrounding context. The translation is voiced with neural text-to-speech and aligned to the original timestamps; when a translated line runs longer than the original, the speech is sped up slightly (up to 1.45x) instead of being cut off. The original audio keeps playing quietly underneath, so you still hear the speaker's tone and pauses.

What you get in the YouTube player:

  • 17 dubbing languages and 60+ voices
  • Separate volume controls for the original audio and the dub
  • Bilingual subtitles you can show or hide

Who it is for: people who learn from long talks, lectures, tutorials and interviews in other languages, language learners who want to hear a line and check the original on screen, and anyone who finds an hour of subtitle reading tiring.

Pricing: free with an account for 30 minutes of dubbing a day. Basic is $9.99/month and Pro is $19.99/month for more hours.

Limitations: it works on youtube.com in desktop Chrome, and a video needs captions to be dubbed.
