What does CompressGIF do?
CompressGIF shrinks animated GIF files for upload limits, email, documentation, and product demos—without you having to rewrite or re-record the animation. Use the browser tool to drop in a GIF, choose a compression mode (Quality first, Size first, or a Target size), preview the result, and download. Local GIF compression runs on your device, keeping your files private.
The browser tool keeps the original dimensions, animation frames, timing, and looping by default, with resizing available if you want a smaller displayed size. Target presets are available at 100 KB, 512 KB, and 1 MB (1,000,000 bytes per “MB”). If the tool can’t reach your selected target, you’ll see a clear “Target not met” message and can still download the smallest result it found; if compression doesn’t reduce the file, the original is kept.
For automation, CompressGIF provides a hosted REST API and an MCP endpoint. API/MCP jobs run in the cloud, separate from the local browser tool, and use Gifsicle for optimization. Batch compression is supported in the browser (up to 3 files per batch on Free, more on paid plans), and Pro can download completed results as a ZIP. A free API key is available with monthly credits, activated via verified Gmail sign-in and a security check.
Whether you’re preparing a chat attachment, tightening a documentation screenshot, or wiring GIF optimization into a workflow, CompressGIF gives you a practical way to reduce file size while checking the visual impact before you download.
Can I compress GIFs without uploading them?
Yes. The browser tool compresses GIFs locally in your device and keeps the processing separate from the cloud API/MCP.
What do Quality first, Size first, and Target size mean?
Quality first aims to keep visual fidelity while reducing size. Size first prioritizes getting smaller by using stronger palette/lossy settings. Target size searches for a result under a specific KB/MB limit.
If I pick a target like 1MB, will the GIF always fit?
Not always. If the tool can’t reach your chosen target, it shows a “Target not met” message and lets you download the smallest result it found.
Does CompressGIF keep the animation timing and looping?
Yes by default in the browser tool. It retains the original dimensions, frame timing, and looping unless you choose to resize.
Can I compress multiple GIFs at once?
Yes. You can run browser batch compression—up to 3 files per batch on Free and more on Pro—processing files one at a time.
How do the API and MCP versions differ from the browser tool?
API and MCP jobs run in the cloud and are separate from local browser compression. They’re intended for workflows where scripts or AI clients start GIF compression jobs automatically.
