What is Microsoft SAM Text-to-Speech?
Microsoft SAM Text-to-Speech is the iconic Windows XP voice originally included with the Microsoft Speech API (SAPI). Our modern JavaScript implementation, SAM TTS, brings this classic Windows voice to your browser, preserving the nostalgic charm while adding convenient modern features.
How does SAM TTS work?
SAM TTS uses a phoneme-based synthesis system rather than recorded samples. It converts text to phonemes, then applies rules to generate Microsoft SAM speech waveforms. You input text, adjust voice parameters (pitch, speed, mouth, throat), and hear or download the resulting speech.
What text works best with SAM TTS?
SAM TTS works best with standard English text and common words. Very technical terms or unusual proper names might require phonetic input for best results. Short to medium-length sentences typically produce the clearest output.
What voice customization options does SAM TTS offer?
SAM TTS provides four main adjustable parameters: Pitch (voice height), Speed (talking rate), Mouth (resonance), and Throat (tone). You can also choose from preset voice profiles including Default Microsoft SAM, Elf, Little Robot, Stuffy Guy, Little Old Lady, and Extra-Terrestrial.
What preset voices are available?
The preset voice library includes Default Microsoft SAM, Elf, Little Robot, Stuffy Guy, Little Old Lady, and Extra-Terrestrial for instant character variations.
What individual voices can I select in the SAM TTS interface?
The interface lets you choose from a range of voices, including:
- Microsoft Sam (classic)
- Microsoft Mike
- Microsoft Mary
- BonziBUDDY
- Adult Female #1 and #2
- Adult Male #1 through #8
- Mike variants (Mike in Hall, Mike in Space, Mike in Stadium)
- Mary variants (Mary in Hall, Mary in Space, Mary in Stadium)
- RoboSoft voices (One through Six)
- RoboSoft Five
- RoboSoft Six
- Female Whisper
- Male Whisper
You can also select from other SAPI4 voices listed in the UI.
Which browsers and platforms are supported?
SAM TTS works in any modern browser, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers. It is designed to run entirely in your browser without external dependencies.
Can I listen to my text before downloading?
Yes. You can instantly hear your text spoken in the Microsoft SAM voice in your browser after adjusting settings, before exporting. You can also download the audio as a WAV file.
Can I download the audio as WAV, and how?
Yes. You can download the generated speech as a WAV file directly from the interface (Download WAV).
Is SAM TTS free to use?
Yes. SAM TTS is free to try in your browser, with no downloads required.
Can I use SAM TTS offline after the initial load?
Yes. SAM TTS runs in your browser with no server processing, and after the initial page load you can use it offline.
Can I use SAM TTS in my own projects, and is there an API?
Yes. SAM TTS provides a simple JavaScript API for easy integration into websites, games, and applications. The API supports text-to-speech conversion, audio playback, buffer generation, and WAV file creation with a few lines of code.
